We are sure most of you have seen the new Cricket Wireless commercials, if you haven't its a newer cell phone company to this area and there slogan is Respect (Along with Aretha's song). One particular ad has Youtube vids of people singing "Respect," one girl in particular is ridiculously good, and apparently she's only 10 years old. Her name is Lukeja Poland and she is sick! I couldn't believe it after hearing the respect song and then I listened to "I Will Always Love You," and
"Take a Bow" and they are even better. This girl is gonna have a long and successful career ahead of her.

Lukeja always liked singing.Seems like over night, when she was about 5 years old from "Mary Had a Little Lamb" ,she started singing Alicia Keys.That's when we got her Aretha's Greatest Hits,and she learned all songs in about a week.First time Lukeja performed in front of 500 people ,she was about 7 y.o.She joined a youth gospel choir and kept performing in various venues including the Apollo and Madison Square Garden in N.Y.C.Lukeja has been playing guitar for a year and for now focusing on writing .Her big brother Tommy and "old rocker dad " are a big help and support.
Last Friday, after a six-week hiatus, I hit the streets of Philly. I wanted to know: can you go back to plain old, everyday street style after the mad rush of fashion week? Phil Oh never did. Tommy Ton never did. Scott Schuman never even really did. Can I? Well, the short answer — at least for now — is yes. I found NYFW addictive, but I haven't been doing it long enough to get truly hooked. It took me half an hour to find two subjects to shoot. And after the frenzy of fashion week, fighting my way for shots, chasing celebs, and moving from show to show, it felt, frankly like a relief. Philly street style has never felt so easy and so comfortable.
And Philly has never felt so much like home. I'm thrilled to be back on the streets of Philly. More shots of NYFW are coming, but so are Philly street style shots.
I spotted Lukeja at the corner of 15th and Walnut and ran ahead to the alley between Walnut and Sansom to get these shots. It was lovely having a conversation with one of my photographic subjects again. She used to model, she told me, "back when she was young." I like the hippy, meets Valkyrie, meets American Apparel sensibility she put together with this outfit. And I appreciate that she was willing to brave the cold to wear it. www.urbanfieldnotes

I'm Lukeja ! I love to sing, obviously. Well, everyone has a story so I guess I'll tell mine. I always loved singing, but you know just like singing along to the I love Lucy theme song or singing happy birthday to my family. But that all changed when I started to listen to Alicia Key's and my parents went out and bought me an Aretha Franklin cd that I too fell in love with, (I think i was about 7) Over the years I performed in local theatres, with a gospel choir, the Apollo, and more. I really do love singing, it brings me in a good mood & I can express myself at the same time.
I also love to write my own songs. I play guitar, so it is like my music partner ;) It helps me come up with melodies! Lalala.
Watching your videos now that I've discovered you - your voice is developing just wonderfully. And hang on to your self and your attitude - that's what makes you stand out among all the others. A new fan - forever!
